Repairs are adding up
Two or three call-outs in a couple of winters usually means several parts are wearing out together. We quote the repair and the replacement side by side.
New gas, oil and LPG boilers surveyed, supplied and fitted in Winslow by a family-run MK18 firm. You get a fixed written quote before anything is ordered.
Leave your number and we will call you back during our opening hours: Mon–Fri 8am–6pm, Sat 8am–1pm.
Most boiler installation quotes are built from a photo and a postcode. Ours start in the house. We count the radiators, measure the mains flow rate at the kitchen tap, look at where the flue can legally terminate and check what the existing pipework is made of. Those four things decide which boiler will work well in your home, and none of them show up on an online form.
Winslow gives us a wide spread of properties to work in. The timber-framed and Georgian brick houses around the Market Square, Sheep Street and Horn Street tend to have boilers tucked into awkward corners, thick walls and flue routes that need thought, especially inside the conservation area. The newer estates on the edge of town are simpler: usually a combi or a system boiler in a utility room or cupboard, reaching the end of its first life. Both are routine work for us, but they are not the same job and we do not price them as if they were.
We fit gas boilers on the mains network in the town, and oil and LPG boilers for homes nearby that sit beyond it. Whatever the fuel, the installation is notified under Building Regulations and the manufacturer’s warranty is registered in your name, so the paperwork is complete when we finish. Everything else we do is on our services page.
The price you are given is fixed and in writing, with the boiler, the flue, the controls, the system clean and the labour set out separately. If something about the house makes the job more involved, such as an undersized gas pipe or a condensate route that needs a pump, we tell you at the survey and include it in the quote. It should not turn up later as an extra on the invoice.
Once the boiler is in we commission it properly: gas rate and combustion readings checked against the manufacturer’s figures, the system balanced so every radiator heats, and the controls set up and explained before we leave.
A repair is often the right answer, and we will say so. These are the situations where a new boiler usually makes more sense.
Two or three call-outs in a couple of winters usually means several parts are wearing out together. We quote the repair and the replacement side by side.
Once a manufacturer stops supplying spares for a model, every fault becomes a hunt for reconditioned parts. That is the point where replacement makes sense.
The main heat exchanger is the most expensive part of a boiler to replace. On an older appliance the repair often costs close to a new boiler.
If the shower goes cold when a tap runs, the boiler type no longer suits the household. A system boiler with a cylinder is often the answer.
Older non-condensing boilers lose a good share of their heat up the flue. A correctly set up condensing boiler recovers much of it.
An extension, a loft conversion or a new bathroom changes the heat and hot water demand. It is the cheapest time to move or upsize the boiler.
A condensing boiler only reaches its rated efficiency when the water returning to it is cool enough for the flue gases to condense, which in practice means a return temperature below about 55°C. If the boiler is oversized or left at the factory flow temperature, it spends its life cycling on and off and never condenses properly. We size the boiler to the heat loss of the house and set the flow temperature to suit the radiators, so it runs for longer at a lower output.
Combi boilers are sized on hot water, not heating. What matters is the flow rate and pressure of the incoming main, so we measure both. A 35kW combi cannot deliver its headline flow rate if the main only supplies 10 litres a minute, and we would rather tell you that before the boiler is on the wall. The gas supply needs checking too: a larger boiler often needs a 22mm or 28mm gas pipe back towards the meter, and an undersized pipe is a common reason a new boiler underperforms.
Then there is the water already in the system. Old radiators and pipework carry magnetite sludge, and a new heat exchanger has narrow waterways that block easily. That is why a clean, a filter and inhibitor are part of every installation, and why manufacturers ask for them as a warranty condition. Water in this part of Buckinghamshire is hard as well, so on combis we talk to you about scale protection on the cold feed.
We visit, measure the house and the incoming services, and talk through how you use heating and hot water.
A fixed price with the boiler model, flue, controls and any extra work listed, so you can compare it line by line.
Dust sheets down, old boiler out, system cleaned, new boiler and controls fitted. We tell you in advance when heating and water will be off.
Combustion checked, radiators balanced, controls explained. Certificates and warranty registration follow in your name.
We do not publish a single price, because two houses on the same street can need very different jobs. These are the things that move the figure.
You get a fixed price in writing before any work starts, with parts and labour set out separately.
We are based in the MK18 area, so Winslow is home ground. We fit boilers throughout the town and in Great Horwood, Little Horwood, Swanbourne, Granborough and the other villages on our coverage list. Mains gas reaches most of Winslow itself, while many of the villages rely on oil or LPG, and we are registered for all three.
We are not tied to one manufacturer. After the survey we recommend a model that suits the house and explain why, including the warranty length that comes with it. If two options are close, we price both and let you choose.
No. Most of Winslow town is on mains gas, but plenty of homes in the surrounding villages are not. We are OFTEC registered for oil and Gas Safe registered for LPG, so we can replace an oil or LPG boiler like for like or talk you through changing fuel.
Usually a new flue, yes, because flues are specific to the boiler. Pipework changes depend on the house. Common ones are a larger gas pipe, a new condensate drain to an internal waste, and alterations around the boiler where the connections sit in different places. All of it is identified at the survey and included in the quote.
Yes. The old boiler, redundant cylinders and loft tanks from a combi conversion, and all the packaging are taken away as part of the job.
A Building Regulations compliance certificate, issued through Gas Safe for gas and LPG or through OFTEC for oil, the completed commissioning checklist in the boiler manual, and the manufacturer’s warranty registered in your name. Keep them together, because a solicitor will ask for them if you sell the house.
In most cases, yes. A flue in the same position as the old one is rarely an issue. If it has to move to a wall that faces the street, or the building is listed, consent may be needed from Buckinghamshire Council. We flag that at the survey so you can check before committing.
